The T. Elmer Cox Historical and Genealogical Library is seeking information about public documents distributed in Greeneville 125 years ago.
An 1883 newspaper announcement about the documents was discovered recently at the library, according to director Don Miller.
The announcement from the Nov. 1, 1883, edition of The Greeneville Herald states, "On last Tuesday three or four wagon loads of old public documents were hauled from the Andrew Johnson office to the Courthouse and given away to any person who would have them."
The library is seeking information from anyone who can shed light on "this remarkable finding," Miller said. "Is there a possibility that the papers might survive somewhere in Greeneville, and might they be found?"
Anyone with information to share is asked to contact the library at 229 N. Main St., at the corner of Main and Spencer streets.
The library is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
The telephone number is 639-4100.
