Local residents awakened this morning to the realization that Confederates had once again occupied downtown Greeneville, a situation that occurred frequently during the Civil War as the town alternated dozens of times between Confederate and Union control.
This weekend, reenactors are camping and providing period demonstrations open to the public as part of the year-long Andrew Johnson Bicentennial Celebration. The men in gray will also return on June 21.
Union reenactors will get their turn to "capture" the town on May 17 and July 26.
A full schedule of events starts at 8 a.m. today -- rain or shine -- at the Andrew Johnson Homestead site and the Nathanael Greene Museum across the street.
Reenactors dressed in gray will occupy important Main Street buildings. Citizens will have opportunities to "meet the generals and leaders" of the occupying force, see various demonstrations of medical, signal corps and communications, visit an authentic Civil War encampment, and watch troops drilling and combat maneuvers.
