'Emancipation Day' Presentation Is Friday

The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site this Friday will commemorate "Emancipation Day," with master storyteller Chetter Galloway's presentation of "Free at Last: Now Let Me Fly!"
The free presentation will be held at the Boys and Girls Club, 740 West Church S. at 2 p.m. Friday.
The performance's script is based on Tennessee slave narratives.
Galloway includes music and drumming in his storytelling.
He earned a master of arts degree in storytelling from East Tennessee State University.
"This is a very special event for the community." said Lizzie Watts, superintendent of the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site. "We invite the public to join us as we celebrate this day with our community."
Aug. 8 is the date Tennessee recognizes as "Emancipation Day."
Aug. 8, 1863, was the day when Andrew Johnson, then military governor of Tennessee, freed his slaves. It has been a day celebrated for years in the African-American communities in East Tennessee.
