Local reenactors portraying President Andrew Johnson and General John Morgan have hit the proverbial road in Tennessee to promote this year's local celebrations honoring the 17th president's 200th birthday.
Daniel Luther will portray Johnson, and Tusculum College sophomore Zachary Smith will be featured in the role of Morgan.
Unionist Johnson and Confederate Morgan, who were arch-enemies during the Civil War, never got this close in real life.
The costumed historical figures will assume their characters' parts when they visit motor coach operators from throughout Tennessee and surrounding states at the three-day 2008 Tennessee Motor Coach Convention in Memphis that starts today.
The General Morgan Inn and the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site are sponsoring the trip, which also includes other representatives from the area, such as Vera Ann Myers of Myers' Greenhouse and Pumpkin Patch.
"Our goal for this trip is to reintroduce Greeneville to the tour industry on a statewide scale and to remind them that we have an abundance of resources in our community that they can take advantage of when they plan their trips," said Ginger Nidiffer, guest services director at the General Morgan Inn, in a press release.
By playing the roles of Morgan and Johnson, the reenactors will be educating tour operators and other tourism industry professionals about this year's commemorative events, as well as about other cultural events and attractions in town including the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, Greeneville's Civil War heritage and the historic General Morgan Inn.
During their tour, the Greeneville representatives will also visit five of Tennessee's major welcome centers in Memphis and Nashville so employees in those centers can become familiar with Greeneville and the bicentennial birthday celebrations this year.
