The Andrew Johnson Homestead this Thursday evening, Oct. 23, will honor the historic call of Andrew Johnson, then the state's military governor, in 1864 for the emancipation of all slaves in Tennessee.
The evening event is from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited
Home tours of the Homestead, at 209 South Main Street, will be free and begin at 5 p.m. through 6:30 p.m.
Daniel Luther will portray Johnson and "revisit" the future president's emancipation speech.
First-grade students from EastView Elementary School will lead in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Leslie Baker-Cole will be a musical guest.
Light refreshments will be served.
The Homestead, President Andrew Johnson's home, underwent an extensive renovation in 2006.
