Andrew Johnson National Cemetery will participate in the national "Wreaths Across America" program on Saturday.
The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site held its first "Wreaths Across America" event in 2007. A total of 1,000 wreaths were placed against the headstones of veterans and their dependents buried in the National Cemetery.
This year, a fir wreath with a bright red ribbon will be placed on each of the graves in the National Cemetery by veterans, the Junior ROTC, and Girl Scout Troop 214. It will be the first year all the graves will be decorated.
The mission of the "Wreaths Across America" program is: "Remember - Honor - and Teach. Remember the fallen; Honor those who serve; Teach our children the value of freedom. "
The local event will be one of hundreds of "Wreaths Across America" ceremonies taking place on Saturday throughout the United States.
Local hosts will be the National Park Service in conjunction with the Andrew Johnson Bicentennial Committee, American Legion Post 64, Disabled American Veterans Post 42, Greene County Veterans Association, Marine Corps League, VFW Post 1990, the Nolichuckey Chapter NSDAR, the city and county Junior ROTC, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Girl Scout Troop 214, and area schools and bands.
Ceremonial wreaths representing each branch of military service along with POWs and MIAs, will be placed around the flagpole atop Monument Hill.
"This year is a special one of remembrance," said Andrew Johnson National Historic Site Superintendent Lizzie Watts. "Not only is it the Bicentennial year of Andrew Johnson's birth, it is the 100th anniversary of the National Cemetery. The country is also involved in a current war, and it is an exceptional time to show our deep appreciation to all veterans."
The wreaths will remain in the cemetery until January 5.
The public is invited to the program which will take place this Saturday, Dec. 13, at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the rostrum by the Lodge in the National Cemetery.
General parking will be at Hal Henard Elementary School with shuttle service to the cemetery provided by Greene County Coach.
Handicap parking will be located inside the National Cemetery with overflow onto Monument Avenue. The Greeneville Police Department will close Monument Avenue to traffic at 9:30 a.m. and reopen the street at 2 p.m.
